In today’s competitive world of fashion, these famous women of fashion have succeeded far beyond the reaches of the runway. Here is a list of the most influential women designers in the fashion world today.

Diane Von Furstenberg

Diane Von Furstenberg was born Diane Halfin in Belgium. She has two children, Alexandre and Tatiana. She designed first jersey wrap dress in 1972. She became a single-mom and a multimillionaire by the age of 26. Her company is made up of 97% women. She is also the President of Council of Fashion Designers of America (2006-present).

Carolina Herrera

Carolina Herrera was born 1939 in Caracas, Venezuela. Her real name is María Carolina Josefina Pacanins y Niño. She has four daughters and six grandchildren. In 1980, she launched a test collection and moved her family to New York. When she became a fashion designer at age 41, it was the first time she ever worked outside the home. Famous clients include Jackie Onassis. She was awarded CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year, 2004. Carolina Herrera has since increased her fashion empire to include perfume, accessories and bridal wear.

Betsey Johnson

Betsy Johnson was born August 10, 1942 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. She has one daughter named Lulu. She premiered her first collection in 1978 after a decade of designer for other major labels. Her empire was expanded to include accessories in 2003. She has received numerous awards including: Coty Award, 1972,Fashion Walk of Fame in 2003, Lifetime Achievement Award, Accessories Council in 2005, American Apparel and Footwear Association’s Image Awards in 2006. She is also a breast cancer survivor.

Anna Sui

Anna Sui born in 1955 grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She launched her debut line of clothing in 1991. She combines several different styles in her sleek designs.

Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney launched her first collection in 1997. She has opened retail outlets in New York, London and Los Angeles, and in 2004 won the Glamour Award for Best Designer of the Year. She has also designed costumes for the concert tours and movies.

Donna Karan

Born Donna Ivy Faske, October 9, 1948 in Forest Hills, New York. She has three children and six grandchildren. In 1989 she launched DKNY. Currently the recipient of three Coty Awards, and honored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards in 1985-1987.She also won Womenswear Designer of the Year in1990 and 1996. She originated the concept of “bridge” dressing while working for Anne Klein. Donna Karan has since resigned as CEO in 1997, but retains the title of chief designer of the company.
